Beware on Constitutional Amendments — vote no.

On the April 2 ballot, voters are being asked two deceptively worded questions about amending the Wisconsin constitution. On the surface, both sound good but in fact they actually hurt the smooth and effective operations of our elections in Wisconsin. Both proposed amendments are solutions in search of a problem--and neither belong in our constitution. Vote no to both.

No to question 1. Unwittingly affirming the fist question stands in the way of adequately funding elections. Elections need to be fully funded. This amendment restricts the ability for municipal governments seeking grants or other resources for funding elections without providing alternative resources. This change will shift the cost burden even further onto tax payers and negatively impact the voter experience, contributing to longer lines and wait times at polling places. The number of polling places could be reduced. Wait times for election night results could be prolonged. Conducting elections cost money that typically exceed state and local resources. Vote "no."

No to question 2. A vote in favor of the second question would naively deprive our hardworking election officials of outside expertise and community support that are essential to ensure that elections run smoothly and accurately. Well-run elections not only cost money but they are a lot of work. Voter education organizations, like the League of Women Voters are non-partisan, and play a critical role in informing the public about their voting rights. Don’t tie the hands of our dedicated elections officials from having access to a whole host of outside experts, volunteers, and community members to make sure our elections are run smoothly, effectively, and accurately.

And give yourself a pat on the back for your civic involvement in good government, and encourage others to do the same.
