The upper part of Madison鈥檚 Monroe Street has quietly become something of a murderer鈥檚 row of restaurants over the past few years. But while there are now places to get great sushi (Sequoia), pizza (Pizza Brutta) and frites (Brasserie V) all within a few hundred yards of each other, you absolutely shouldn鈥檛 overlook the relatively new kid on the block: Chef Brian Hamilton鈥檚 Kettle Black Kitchen.

What started as a meal kit service back in 2020 has blossomed into a comfy-yet-elegant eating experience that will leave you both completely comforted and simply satisfied.

Since opening in 2020, Brian Hamilton鈥檚 Kettle Black Kitchen has already survived several twists and turns to get to this point, and it鈥檚 clear he鈥檚 used the experience to hone his approach to a lean and well-refined menu, filled with several must-have dishes and only a few scant misses. In addition to the heavenly Cornish hen and maple pork shank, there鈥檚 also a couple of steak offerings鈥攁 grilled flat iron ($26) with the same caramelized onions that gird the French onion soup and a set of excellent charred sweet potato medallions, as well as a pricier ribeye ($40)鈥攂ut frankly, this isn鈥檛 the place to savor steak. If you can, opt instead for the soon-to-be-added salmon dish or the pan-seared cod ($28), served with a buttery vermouth beurre blanc and mushrooms. And don鈥檛 forget to save room for a piece that sour orange pie鈥攜ou might find yourself asking if they鈥檒l sell you a full one to take home.
